The iron a baby is born with starts running low somewhere between four and six months, and breast milk carries very little of it. Declining iron stores are part of the background to why milk alone stops being enough around then — not the whole reason the guidance settles on six months, but a real part of it. Formula is fortified with iron, so a baby taking a lot of it has more cover; that cover falls away as milk volumes drop through the first year, so iron-rich food still matters either way.

Why does iron matter from six months?
Because the store runs out and the replacement has to come from food. A baby builds an iron reserve in the last weeks of pregnancy and draws on it through the early months. How long it lasts varies a great deal — gestation at birth, birthweight and when the cord was clamped all change it — but for a baby born at term it is typically four to six months. Breast milk is an excellent food that happens to be a poor iron source, so from that point iron arrives on the tray or it does not arrive.
This matters slightly more with baby-led weaning than with purées, for an unglamorous reason: early self-fed portions are genuinely tiny. A baby learning to grip is not eating much of anything, so what they do manage is worth choosing deliberately.
Iron deficiency does not announce itself at a mealtime, and it is worth knowing that the UK does not routinely test babies for it — the National Screening Committee looked at population screening and recommended against it. Nobody is quietly checking in the background, so noticing is the parent's job and raising it is worth doing early.
Signs worth mentioning to your health visitor or GP: unusual paleness, particularly the face, palms or inside the lower eyelids; being more tired or listless than usual; irritability; poor appetite; getting out of breath easily; picking up infections more than you would expect; or growth that has slowed. None of these are proof of anything on their own — they are reasons to ask rather than reasons to panic, and iron deficiency is diagnosed on a blood test, not on a website.
What if your baby was born prematurely?
Then this article is not the right level of detail for you, and the answer is likely to be an active one. Babies born before 37 weeks start with substantially smaller iron stores, run them down earlier, and are commonly prescribed iron rather than managed through food alone — often continuing until the weaning diet is established somewhere between six and twelve months.
Do not start or stop an iron supplement on your own. Your neonatal team, GP or health visitor knows your baby's history and is the person to ask. That applies to babies who were small for their dates, too.
Which first foods actually carry iron?
These are some of the foods in our catalogue carrying at least 1mg of iron per 100g, with animal sources listed first for a reason explained in the next section. It is a selection rather than the full set — shellfish and seasonings clear the same bar on paper without being sensible ways for a baby to get iron:

Read that middle column before comparing rows. Dry oats and lentils absorb several times their weight in water, and 100g of raw spinach cooks down to a couple of spoonfuls — so these are not like-for-like servings, and the 1mg cut-off is ours rather than a published standard. Treat the table as a way to find candidates, not a calculation of what your baby took in.
Why does meat count for more than the table suggests?
Because the numbers measure how much iron is in the food, not how much of it a body can take up, and those are very different for animal and plant sources.
Iron from meat and fish is absorbed several times more readily than iron from beans, lentils, tofu or cereal — roughly 15 to 35 per cent of it, against as little as 2 to 5 per cent from some plant sources. Spinach is the clearest illustration: it sits above beef in the table and is a considerably weaker source in practice, because the iron in leafy greens is absorbed poorly. Ranking foods by the raw figure alone gets this exactly backwards.
Two things follow. If you eat meat, slow-cooked beef or lamb does more here than anything else on the list. And for the plant sources, serving them alongside something rich in vitamin C — red pepper, tomato, a few berries — helps the body take up more.
How do you serve iron-rich food to a six-month-old?
The problem with most iron-rich food is that it is either too tough to gnaw or too wet to hold, and a six-month-old grips with a whole fist and cannot open it to get at anything inside.
For meat, cook it until it shreds rather than serving a firm strip. A slow-cooked piece of beef or lamb holds together while a baby sucks and gnaws on it, which makes it a better first finger food than it sounds. If you use mince, bind it and keep it moist — a dry, crumbly patty falls apart into small hard pieces in the mouth, which is the opposite of what you want. Whichever you use, it should pass the same test as everything else: squashable between your finger and thumb.
For anything wet — lentils, porridge, hummus, iron-fortified cereal — load a spoon and hold it out handle-first for your baby to take. That is still self-feeding, and it is how food that will not hold its own shape gets into a baby who cannot yet use a spoon.

Should you just buy an iron supplement?
No — not without being told to. Iron deficiency is diagnosed on a blood test and treated with iron prescribed at a dose for that child. Iron is also one of the commonest causes of serious accidental poisoning in young children, so a bottle bought off the shelf and dosed by guesswork is a genuinely bad idea. If you are worried, ask for the test rather than buying the treatment.
Does anything work against iron?
Cow's milk does, in quantity, and it is the commonest way iron intake goes wrong later in the first year. Large volumes fill a baby up and displace iron-rich food, which makes deficiency more likely:
It is more than displacement: unmodified cow's milk also hinders the absorption of iron from plant sources, and in some infants causes small amounts of gut blood loss. The concern is volume as a drink, not the ingredient itself.
Tea works against iron too, for a different reason: the tannins bind non-haem iron and reduce how much gets absorbed. It is not a drink for babies in any case.
What if your baby is vegetarian or vegan?
Iron needs more attention, since every source on the list above is a plant one and those are absorbed less readily — the vitamin C pairing does more work here than it does for a family eating meat.
Vitamin B12 is the bigger issue, though, and it is the reason this is worth a conversation rather than a paragraph. B12 comes almost entirely from animal foods, and a deficiency in a breastfed baby whose mother is also vegan can cause serious harm. If your baby is being weaned onto a vegan diet, ask your GP or health visitor for a referral to a paediatric dietitian rather than working it out from articles.
The short version
Vitamin D is the other thing that changes around now, and it works differently — food will not supply it, so the advice is a daily supplement rather than a shopping list. That has its own guide.
From around six months, aim for something iron-rich on most days. Meat and fish are absorbed far better than plants, so slow-cooked beef does more than the numbers suggest; serve plant sources with something high in vitamin C. Keep cow's milk out of the beaker until twelve months. Nobody routinely tests babies for iron deficiency in the UK, so if your baby seems unusually pale or tired, say so rather than waiting for someone to spot it — and if they were born early, ask your team about iron specifically.
