When can a baby have grapes?

Grapes can be given to a baby from around six months, the same as most other first foods — the condition is how they're cut, not when they start. NHS guidance names whole grapes directly as a choking hazard and says to cut small round fruit into quarters lengthways, and that instruction runs for years longer than most parents expect.
When can a baby have grapes?
From around six months, in step with other first foods — grapes are not held back the way honey or cow's milk as a drink are. What changes with age is the cut, not whether grapes are on the table at all.
How do you cut grapes for a baby or toddler?
Into quarters, lengthways — not in half, and never left whole. The NHS's own wording: "cut small round fruits like grapes, cherries, berries, strawberries and cherry tomatoes into quarters (4 small pieces)." Lengthways matters because it removes the round cross-section that can seal a windpipe; halving a grape still leaves two dome shapes that can do the same thing.
Why are grapes a choking hazard?
Because a whole or halved grape is close to the exact diameter and shape of a young child's airway, and the smooth skin makes it hard to cough back up if it lodges. NHS guidance groups grapes with cherry tomatoes, blueberries and olives for the same reason: round, roughly airway-sized, and slippery. It is a geometry problem more than a food problem, which is why quartering — not cooking, not peeling — is the fix.
Until what age should you cut grapes?
Until around five years old. This is longer than most people assume, and longer than most baby-food advice for other textures — many first-food restrictions ease off well before a child's second birthday, but the round-foods cutting rule for grapes, cherry tomatoes and similar fruit holds through nursery age. If you are cutting grapes for an older sibling at the same table as a six-month-old, the same quarters apply to both.
Can babies eat grape skin?
Yes — the skin itself isn't the hazard, the shape is. There's no guidance to peel grapes for babies; quartering lengthways already removes the round cross-section that makes a whole or halved grape dangerous, skin included.
If you're building out a wider baby-led weaning plate, grapes are a normal fruit finger food once cut this way, alongside banana, pear and avocado.

The short version
Grapes can start at six months. Cut them into quarters lengthways, not in half and never whole, and keep doing it until around five years old — the same instruction applies to cherry tomatoes and other small round fruit at the same table.
